Work at KAOlin
Work at Kaolin
KAOLIN is a ceramics studio where dozens of students throw, glaze and experiment every week. We are also the organiser of Keramiekmarkt Utrecht (KMU). We're looking to grow our team: a teacher and a studio assistant. Sound like you or someone you know? Read on.
Vacancy: ceramics teacher (wheel throwing)
You'll teach wheel-throwing classes in stoneware to a group of up to 7 students. New teachers usually start with a 6-week beginners' course; if it's a good fit on both sides, a full course follows.
What we're looking for Extensive experience throwing stoneware comes first. This is strictly a wheel-throwing class, not a handbuilding class. You speak Dutch and English (a plus). After class, you tidy up; doing the dishes and leaving the studio clean are part of the job.
What we offer You receive 50% of the course revenue and invoice as a freelancer. Classes run with a minimum of 4 students. You get a key to the studio, a clear closing checklist, and full freedom to shape the class as you see fit: it's your class.
Assistantship / apprenticeship: studio assistant
You'll coordinate one evening open studio: opening and closing the space and making sure the evening runs smoothly. You'll also help prepare and pack large commissions. A good part of the work is cleaning and maintaining the studio in crisp condition.
What I’m looking for You can already work independently on the wheel. This is not an entry-level spot to learn throwing, but a place to grow into studio practice.
What I’ll offer This is an unpaid position in exchange for an apprenticeship: you work alongside in a professional ceramics studio and receive expert feedback on your own work.
Extra: Keramiekmarkt Utrecht
KAOLIN organises Keramiekmarkt Utrecht (KMU). If you work with our team, you can (if you like) get involved in the market as a crew member. That comes with real perks:
A free stall at the market
The possibility of a paid role at or in the run-up to the market
A network of 300+ Dutch ceramicists
Direct contact with sponsors such as Keramikos, Hazelaar, Veka and Pottenbakster
Interested?
Send a short email to studiokaolin@gmail.com telling me about yourself and your experience on the wheel. Photos or a link to your work are very welcome. I’ll invite you for a chat at the studio.
