Work process

Throwing

Wheel throwing starts with a chunk of wet clay on the potters’ wheel. By adjusting your weight and pushing in the right direction, clay is centered and can be shaped to become a plate, bowl or vase or anything you can imagine.

Trimming

Trimming is done at the leather hard stage: hard enough to touch, soft enough to carve. This stage refines the wheel thrown piece.

Glazing

After the vessel is fired at about 1000 degrees Celsius, it can be glazed by dipping. Sometimes raw glazing is used, depending on the vessel and the glaze. This way the piece doesn’t need a first firing.

firing

Finally the work is fired around 1260 degrees Celsius. This last firing vitrifies the glaze into a glass layer which creates a smooth finish and often adds colour.
