Local Clay
Clay can be found anywhere in the world, mostly near riverbanks, the sea, or in the countryside. Whilst travelling, I started to search for clay to bring home and incorporate it into a teabowl design. This way, whenever I pour myself a cup of coffee or tea, I can reminisce on beautiful memories. Each type of clay possesses its own structure, composition, colour, and firing method, which imparts uniqueness to every vessel.
I strive to intervene as little as possible with the clay to maintain its natural characteristics. Sometimes, there may be small stones or grass within the clay, but often they pose no inconvenience. Instead, they present a challenge and limitation, leading to beautiful one-of-a-kind designs. The clay itself dictates its application, whether it is being thrown when malleable, blended with other clays, employed in a (wood ash) glaze, or prepared for slip decorations.
If you come across clay and desire to transform it into something special, do get in touch. Together, we can explore a design that incorporates this clay, enabling me to create a lasting vessel or an exceptionally remarkable gift for you.
